Himachal Holiday Packages

Himachal Pradesh is usually where first-time Indian travelers fall for the mountains, and the Manali-Shimla-Dharamshala loop remains the easiest way to see why. Pine ridges, old colonial hill towns, and valleys that smell faintly of woodsmoke and apple orchards are just an overnight drive or a short flight away from Delhi.

People head to this circuit for different reasons that happen to sit close together on a map. Manali draws trekkers, honeymooners and anyone chasing snow at Solang or Rohtang; Shimla offers the slower pleasure of Mall Road walks and a colonial-era toy train that's a UNESCO heritage line in its own right; Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj add a Tibetan monastery town with mountain views and a genuinely different pace. Most packages string two or three of these together rather than picking just one.

The best window depends on what you want. March to June brings clear skies, blooming orchards and comfortable daytime temperatures, making it the easiest season for families and first-timers. December to February brings reliable snow around Manali and Kufri, but also bitter cold nights, occasional road closures, and limited mobility if a fresh snowfall shuts the highway. July to September is monsoon season, and while the valleys turn a startling green, the Kullu-Manali road and several viewpoints carry a real landslide risk, so many agencies quietly discourage this window.

From Delhi, the most common routes are an overnight Volvo bus to Manali (roughly 12-14 hours) or a flight into Kullu-Bhuntar airport, which is small and weather-dependent, so flights get cancelled more often than travelers expect. Many people instead fly or drive to Chandigarh and continue by road, which is steadier. For Shimla, the heritage route is a train to Kalka followed by the narrow-gauge toy train up the mountain, a slow but memorable alternative to a direct cab. Reaching Dharamshala usually means flying into Gaggal airport near Kangra or continuing by road from Manali or Delhi.

A typical 5N/6D Manali-Shimla package includes hotel stays on double-sharing, breakfast and dinner, and a private cab for sightseeing and intercity transfers, usually landing between ₹12,000 and 18,000 per person for a standard 3-star setup. Add a Dharamshala leg or move to 4-star and boutique hill properties and the number climbs to ₹22,000-35,000 or more. Rohtang Pass permits, oxygen cylinders for high-altitude visits, and adventure activities like paragliding or river rafting are almost always billed separately, so ask before you compare two quotes side by side.

First-timers should pack real layers even in summer, since evenings turn cold fast at altitude, and keep a government ID handy since some high-altitude points require registration. If Rohtang or Kunzum is on the itinerary, check whether the pass is open for the season you're booking, since both close for months in winter and reopen on unpredictable dates. It also helps to book snow-point activities like sledging or yak rides directly at the spot rather than through a tour desk, since on-the-spot rates are usually lower and more transparent.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rohtang Pass included in a standard Manali package?

Usually not automatically. Rohtang needs a separate online permit and is subject to seasonal closures and daily vehicle limits, so most packages list it as an optional add-on. Confirm with the operator whether the permit fee and the day's cab cost are already built into your quote.

How many days do I need for the Manali-Shimla-Dharamshala circuit?

Six to seven days is comfortable for all three, with two nights each in Manali and Shimla and one or two in Dharamshala. Trying to cover all three in under five days usually means long travel days with little time to actually walk around.

When is the best time to see snow in Manali without road-closure risk?

Late December through February gives the most reliable snow, but check recent weather reports before booking, since heavy snowfall can shut the Manali-Rohtang road for days. Early March often has leftover snow at higher points with calmer roads.

Is a Himachal package cheaper than a Kashmir or Uttarakhand trip?

Generally yes for similar durations, since Himachal has denser road and rail connectivity and more competing hotel inventory, which keeps both cabs and stays relatively affordable. Prices still shift by season, so compare quotes for the same travel dates rather than general averages.

Do I need any special permit to travel in Himachal as an Indian citizen?

No general permit is needed for Manali, Shimla or Dharamshala. The only common exception is the Rohtang Pass permit, and if your itinerary pushes further toward Spiti or the Inner Line areas near the Tibet border, separate permits apply there too.
