Meghalaya Holiday Packages
Meghalaya rewards travelers willing to walk a little further than the usual hill-station crowd, descending stone-and-bamboo steps to reach root bridges grown by hand over generations, or driving past waterfalls locals still measure by season rather than fame. It's one of the few Indian holidays where the journey between stops, through Khasi villages and pine ridges, is as memorable as the destination itself.
Travelers come here for things that genuinely don't exist elsewhere in India: the double-decker living root bridge near Nongriat, grown over decades by training rubber fig tree roots across a gorge, and Dawki's river, which turns an almost unreal clear green in the dry months. Add Cherrapunji's waterfalls and limestone caves, Mawlynnong's reputation as one of the cleanest villages around, and Shillong's own cafe culture and live-music scene, and the appeal becomes less about ticking off sights and more about a slower, outdoor-focused pace.
October through April is the dependable window, with clear skies, visible waterfalls and the clean-water effect at Dawki at its best from roughly November to February. Meghalaya is also one of the wettest places on earth during monsoon, and while June to September rainfall makes the landscape dramatically green, it also brings landslide risk, slippery trek routes to the root bridges, and waterfalls too swollen to approach safely, so most packages avoid scheduling the trek-heavy days in that window.
Guwahati's airport is the practical gateway, since Shillong's own Umroi airport has very limited flight options. From Guwahati, it's roughly 100-150 km and three to four hours by road to Shillong, usually covered by a shared or private cab arranged as part of the package. There's no direct rail link into the Khasi hills, so travelers from Delhi, Kolkata or Mumbai typically fly into Guwahati and continue entirely by road from there.
A typical 5N/6D Shillong-Cherrapunji-Mawlynnong-Dawki package covers hotel stays, breakfast, and a private cab for all sightseeing and transfers, generally running ₹14,000-22,000 per person for a standard setup, with homestays or boutique stays in Shillong pushing costs higher. The Nongriat double-decker root bridge trek is almost always listed as optional, since it involves roughly 3,500 steps down and back up, and a local guide fee is usually charged on top of the base package.
First-timers should carry enough cash, since ATMs thin out quickly outside Shillong and card acceptance is patchy in villages near Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong. The root bridge trek genuinely demands decent fitness and proper grip shoes rather than sandals, and mobile network coverage drops in and out through much of the Cherrapunji stretch, so download offline maps in advance. If traveling in the rainier months, pack a proper rain shell rather than just an umbrella, since the wind at Cherrapunji makes umbrellas close to useless.

Frequently asked questions
Is the living root bridge trek included in standard Meghalaya packages?
Most packages treat the Nongriat double-decker root bridge trek as an optional day, separate from the core sightseeing itinerary, since it's physically demanding and needs extra time. Check whether the guide fee and the trailhead transfer are quoted separately before comparing two packages.
When is Dawki's water clearest?
Roughly November through February, after the monsoon silt has settled, gives the clearest, most photogenic water. By late monsoon and early autumn the river often still carries sediment and looks far less dramatic.
How far is Shillong from Guwahati airport?
About 100-150 km, which typically takes three to four hours by road depending on traffic and weather. Nearly every Meghalaya package includes this transfer as part of the first day's itinerary.
How many days are enough for a Shillong-Cherrapunji-Mawlynnong-Dawki circuit?
Five to six days works well for most travelers, allowing a couple of nights in Shillong and enough time to cover Cherrapunji's waterfalls, Mawlynnong, and Dawki without rushing. Add a day if you want to attempt the Nongriat root bridge trek.
Is Meghalaya a good choice outside the peak October-April window?
It can be, especially for travelers who want to see the region at its greenest and don't mind rain, but expect waterfalls to be inaccessible at times, treks to be riskier, and some remote-village roads to be slower. Most comparison sites and agencies will flag this clearly if you select monsoon dates.
